There are four snails of which I'd like an ID. Two of which I thought I had right, but the new two snails I found make me doubt their ID.
There are two snails I've had for a while that I think are Arianta arbustorum, named Hazel and Morpheus (Hazel seems ill.. I think I may be giving wrong care.)
These are Hazel and Morpheus compared (Morpheus on the left, Hazel to the right.):
You can see Morpheus has a near-black body. Hazel is brown-ish (grey body with a brown-ish color on top). Also Morpheus seems to have developed some kind of lip, whereas Hazel hasn't (yet?). You can also see that Hazel is retracted quite deep into her shell. For the past few days she is moving really slowly and she has issues gripping on to things. I've treated her with extra moisture and she eats plenty, but she seems to be doing bad. Here are some more pictures of Hazel. Her shell ends in a weird kind of pointy shape:
Can anyone confirm that they are indeed Arianta arbustorum? And if not, what do you think they are? I live in the Netherlands where Arianta arbustorum is rather common (less common than Cepaea nemoralis or Helix aspersa). Additionally I would love to learn some more about how to take better care of these two. They seem kinda sad..
The thing that made me doubt about their species is two new snails I found, whom I haven't named yet.
Recently I found a shell of a type of snail I hadn't seen in real life before, and this morning I found another similar looking one:
Because I found these shells, I decided to go out in the garden and try to find live ones of these.
I was thinking they might have been a subspecies of Mesodon, but it's hard to find ID information about land snails in the Netherlands unfortunately.
But I was in luck on my search for live ones. I found the following two pretties, the first of which (the one to the right) I had almost mistaken for a Hazel- and Morpheus type snail, because the pattern on its shell is so similar, however it is much less pointy, and when I picked it up I noticed a very distinctive white lip. Can anyone ID these two for me? I think they're the same species, but different sub-species. The one to the left also has some sort of white lip, but not as distinctive. The "golden" snail has a body color like Hazels', grey with a brown-ish color on top. The one with white patches has a dark grey color, like Morpheus.
Here's a comparison of the new white-lipped snail to the left, and my snail Hazel to the right. (Poor hazel ;-; I hope she gets better!)
Can someone help me ID these snails? To make conversation easier, numbers for the snails:
Also, does anyone know what causes these white spot? My snail Mochi has them too, and I see many snails in the garden who have them.
Are these spots permanent or can they be "fixed" somehow?
If anyone has the same species/similar snails I would love to see them
Thanks in advance for any help!
